How to measure your door opening

  1. Width: measure the raw wall opening from wall to wall, before any frame is fixed. Check at the top, middle and bottom and use the smallest number.
  2. Height: measure from the finished floor to the underside of the lintel on both sides and use the smaller number. If the floor is not laid yet, allow for the tile or stone that will go on top.
  3. Wall thickness: measure at the edge of the opening, including plaster on both sides.
  4. Single or double: openings wider than about 43 inches (1100 mm) usually work better as a double door.

Replacing only the door and keeping your old frame? Choose Door only in the tool and measure the inside of your frame instead.

Frame section, rebate and architrave explained

Frame section (chaukhat) is the size of the frame timber when you cut through it, written as face width x depth. Our standard frame has a 2½ inch face, made of a 2 inch frame and a ½ inch rebate. The depth usually matches the wall, for example 6 or 9 inches.

The rebate is the step in the frame that the door closes against. It stops the door from swinging through and hides the fixings.

The architrave is the strip fixed around the frame on the wall. It is called moulding in India and trim in the US. It hides the joint between the frame and the plaster and is usually fitted on both sides of the wall.

Common door sizes

These are the sizes we see most often. Always measure your own opening, because site sizes vary.

  • Main entrance door (India): around 3½ x 7 ft or larger, often as a double door.
  • Bedroom door (India): around 3 x 7 ft.
  • Bathroom door (India): around 2½ x 7 ft.
  • Interior door (US): usually 30 to 36 inches wide and 80 inches high.

Single door or double door?

A single door is simpler, costs less and needs less wall space to swing. A double door suits wide openings, main entrances and puja rooms. You can open one leaf for daily use and both when moving furniture. As a rule of thumb, go double when the clear opening is wider than about 43 inches (1100 mm).

Frequently asked questions

What happens after I send my sizes?

We check your sizes and reply on WhatsApp with design, material and price options, so you can compare before you decide. If anything looks off, we’ll ask before quoting.

Can I choose my door design here?

No. This tool is only for measurements, so we can quote correctly. The drawings are simple outlines that help you understand each size. After you send your sizes, we’ll share door designs, materials, finishes and prices with you.

Do I need to be an expert to use this?

No. It’s made for homeowners. Tap any box and an arrow shows exactly which measurement it is on the drawing. If you’re unsure, WhatsApp us and we’ll help you measure.

What is the difference between the wall opening and the door size?

The wall opening is the hole in the wall. The frame sits inside it and takes up space on both sides and at the top, so the door is always smaller than the opening. For a 42 x 96 inch opening with our standard frame, the door comes to about 37¾ x 93⅝ inches.

What frame size do I need?

Our standard frame has a 2½ inch face: a 2 inch frame plus a ½ inch rebate. The depth should match your wall thickness so the architrave sits neatly on both sides.

How thick should my door be?

We make doors in 40, 50, 60 and 70 mm. Most interior doors are 40 mm. Main doors and large doors are usually made thicker.

Is the tool accurate enough to order from?

It gives you a very close starting size. Our team always confirms the final sizes with a site measurement before production.

Can I send several doors at once?

Yes. Add each door in the tool, set the quantity and send it. We get every door with its size and quantity in one message.
